Hydrophobic vs. Hydrophilic Film Coating
Hydrophobic vs. Hydrophilic Film Coating

"Do you need a hydrophobic coating or a hydrophilic coating? The answer to that question will usually be apparent to you. Do you want the water to run off or spread out over the surface of your substrate?

However, in optical applications, the answer isn't as simple as you might think. As Dr. Eric Hanson explains, hydrophobic coatings force water to bead up on the surface. Optically, these water beads will obstruct vision. A hydrophilic coating will allow the water to spread out evenly as a thin film on the surface, which makes it much easier to see through."
